On the Gold Coast the honest answer is that most homes want both. Engineered timber gives you real oak or Australian hardwood in the living areas, while a rigid core hybrid takes the kitchen, laundry and any room where water and sand come in on bare feet. The mistake is putting solid timber in a coastal home at all.
Burleigh, Palm Beach and the rest of the southern Gold Coast sit in warm, humid air for most of the year, and half the houses are within a few streets of salt water. Timber moves with moisture. A solid hardwood board takes that humidity in through the whole board, swells across the summer and shrinks back in the dry, which is how gaps and cupping happen. That is why we do not sell solid timber at all.
Engineered timber solves it by putting a real timber wear layer over a stable engineered core, so the board holds its shape in our humidity while still being genuine oak or Blackbutt on top. Hybrid solves it a different way: there is no timber to move in the first place.
Hybrid, or SPC, is a rigid stone polymer core plank with a timber look printed and textured on the surface. Ours are water resistant, silica free and low VOC, with an IXPE acoustic underlay already bonded to the back and a Välinge 2G click lock on the edges. The click lock matters more than it sounds: it means the floor floats over the subfloor with no glue, goes down fast, and a damaged plank can be lifted and swapped later.
Because the core is rigid, it does not show the bumps in a slightly uneven slab the way soft vinyl does, and it does not swell when the laundry floods or the dog walks in off the beach.
Both our engineered timber and our SPC hybrid ranges carry a twenty five year residential surface wear warranty, with a five year term for commercial use. So the decision is not about which one lasts. It is about which one suits the room, and on the Gold Coast that usually means timber where you live and hybrid where you wash, cook and walk in from the beach.
Bring a photo of the room and tell us honestly what happens in it. Then walk on both. Full size boards of every range are on the floor at Burleigh Heads, and you can take samples home to see them in your own light. Most people who come in certain they want one or the other leave with a floor plan that uses both, and they are usually right to.
